How Millennials Are Using Technology for More than Just Having Fun
I was walking to my friend’s house off McKinney in uptown Dallas one day and saw these Bird Scooters on the sidewalk. I got curious and decided to take a ride. Two hours later, I’m on the other side of Knox Henderson cruising around Dallas.
Millennials love technology and want to be up to date on the coolest/hippest new trend. The new Bird Scooters that are now on every corner in Dallas fit that description.
I’m a commercial real estate broker and focus heavily on the Design District. I spend 70 percent of my day knocking on doors trying to procure new business. The most important part of cold calling is to make yourself stand out .
So I made my calls that day not on foot, like every other guy on the street, but on… a Bird Scooter. I made my way down Levee Street making my calls on that scooter, I had at least five people yell out a funny comment or laugh out loud as I whizzed past them. Everyone thought it was hilarious – some guy in a full-blown suit and tie, marketing flyers spilling out of a Kroger sack as I zoomed by, making my calls door to door on a scooter.
It was a great ice breaker, every call I made that day… the first sentence out of the prospect’s mouth was about the scooter and how funny it was. It was a true game-changer and there’s no doubt in my mind I’ve picked up new business that I might not have otherwise due to utilizing those scooters for not only having fun but for business. I even had broker friends who work at competing firms call me and say “I heard you were cruising around Design District making calls on a scooter… that’s hilarious.”
Being adaptive and creative is the only way to grow in the business world – whether that means your workday attitude or your mode of transportation. So next time you’re walking around Dallas and see a scooter on the sidewalk… hop on. You never know what might come of it.
