PASADENA, CA – May 15, 2024 – Lee & Associates – Pasadena was proud to sponsor an incredibly informative event presented by the Italian American Lawyers Association held at Casa Italiana in Los Angeles on the topic of California’s newest Community Assistance, Recovery, and Empowerment (CARE) Court.
CARE Court is a new, state-funded program offering resources to those suffering from mental illness hardship and their loved ones and caregivers who struggle to find lifesaving support and assistance, recently launched by the Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health.
“CARE Court helps people with untreated schizophrenia and other associated psychotic disorders receive treatment and services for their health and well-being. Participants can receive many kinds of support to promote their recovery and well-being, which may include counseling, medication, housing options, social services, and others. Rather than cycling through jails and emergency rooms, CARE Court gives vulnerable individuals and those who care for them another path to access key services that can help keep them safe. The panel of five Los Angeles County judges and one Presiding Justice, moderated by Judge Yvette Verastegui, Assistant Supervising Judge, Criminal Division, did an excellent job promoting this new resource, discussing the impact the program has made in the Los Angeles Community and how fellow lawyers, medical professionals, law enforcement, first responders and loved ones can petition for help with a simplified and thoughtful process.
Each panel member has experience in different areas of the legal system and offered insight into how they can use CARE Court to work together to help alleviate the homeless and mental health crisis Los Angeles is experiencing.
The “What’s New in the Court” panel included: Judge Rene Gilbertson, Presiding Judge CARE Court; Judge Maria Cavalluzzi, Mental Health Court; Judge Scott Herin, Presiding Judge CARE Court; Judge Akemi Arakaki, Presiding Judge Juvenile Court; Judge Shelley Kaufman, Supervising Judge, Family Law Division; and Presiding Justice Maria Stratton, Court of Appeal, Div. 8.
